Digital Interactions

If you’ve got access to the internet and you’re plugged in to social media platforms like Instagram, then as a woman, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that people have slipped into your DM on several occasions. For some it might even be a daily occurrence, who knows?

Personally, I get all sorts in my inbox. From people who genuinely enjoy my content and want to let me know that I inspire them, to really insightful and sometimes entertaining conversations with strangers from all corners of the globe. And yes, if you were wondering, I do get the ones from fellas who want to be “close friends”

Since the birth of social media, we’ve been able to open our lives to people we would have otherwise been unable to connect with, such people we would have never known existed. But here we are in 2017, able to tell what our favourite digital friend has eaten for lunch, gone for shopping or travelled on holiday. years ago, this would have been mind boggling, even surreal, but indeed it’s now the norm and our every day reality.

So it wasn’t surprising when a few months ago, I received a DM from someone I had never met. What was surprising though was that she had only a few hours to spend in London before catching her next flight to Israel and she wanted to spend it with me. Quite the organized person, Abijah had contacted me well before time, so I left that day free and prepared to meet her.

Since it was her first time in London, I thought witnessing the beauty and craziness of Oxford Street would be just about right, so we settled at Tinseltown, an American style diner for lunch. The weather was brilliant on the day and so we got to a lil photoshoot session after chatting and bonding over boneless chicken wings, fries, milkshakes and brownie sundaes. I learnt of her recent fury into the blogging world and passed on the few wisdom and experiences I had to share. It’s safe to say that when next I’m in Canada, I know just the person I’d be hanging out with.

When there’s so much backlash about social media, I ask, what do you use it for? Therein lies its usefulness or uselessness. Social media has enabled me to connect with a lot of amazing people over the years and I hope for more wonderful interactions as this and its all the more awesome when it finally transcends the digital sphere to solid, physical reality.
